And ring in the Lunar New Year with Wu Man, "the world's greatest pipa player" (Wall Street Journal), as she performs a concerto by Zhao Jiping (China’s answer to John WIlliams) inspired by the folksongs of Wu Man’s hometown.

Beethoven Symphony No. 9
IPO lowers the curtain on their 46th season with a resounding performance of one of music’s most celebrated and well-known works, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. With its debut performance having taken place in Vienna on May 7, 1824, IPO’s performance will commence nearly 200 years to the day after it first came alive. Also, on the bill for this epic evening will be the third installment by IPO Composer-in-Residence Oswald Huỳnh, as well as Caroline Shaw’s Seven Joys. In 2013, at just 30 years old, Shaw became the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for her composition Partita for 8 Voices. Kimberly E. Jones (soprano), Leah Dexter (Mezzo-Soprano), Ryan Townsend Strand (Tenor), Bill McMurray (Baritone) and the Chicago Community Chorus will lend their thunderous talents to the evening’s program.

Join IPO for an enchanting orchestral presentation that takes students into a world where music becomes pure magic. Designed to introduce 3rd through 8th-grade audiences to the wonders of the orchestra, There Is Magic In Music actively engages students in the compositional process, resulting in a unique world premiere crafted during each and every performance.
This 50-minute concert is a great mix of classical favorites along with fresh, new music that will see its World Premiere on IPO’s main stage two days later! Featured composers include Bologne, Mozart, Haydn, and IPO’s 2023/24 Composer-in-Residence, Oswald Huỳnh.
This interactive concert experience will allow for chances to meet IPO musicians and more!

UNCSA Faculty and Guest Artist Chamber Music Showcase
Claire Chenette, principal oboe with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, rejoins members of the UNCSA music faculty and guest artist clarinetist Anthony Taylor, faculty of the University of North Carolina College of Visual and Performing Arts, for a concert of mixed chamber music from all over the world.
This concert will feature the talents of UNCSA faculty Tadeu Coelho on flute, Oskar Espina Ruiz on clarinet, Robert Young on saxophone, Stephanie Patterson on bassoon, Maria Serkin on French horn and Ksenija Komljenovic on percussion. The program includes works by living composers Tania León, Du Yun, Niloufar Nourbakhsh, Dai Fujikura, Oswald Huỳnh and Jeff Scott.

Westminster Concert Series: Hear & Now featuring Xavier Muzik
Westminster Concert Series is thrilled to announce the selection of Xavier Muzik as the 23-24 Hear & Now commissioned composer. Xavier writes about this commission, “The goal of my "Hear & Now" composition is to create a transformative and immersive experience for the audience. Through the combination of music, visuals, and symbolic narratives woven through my photography, I aim to evoke my state of mind at the time I took the photos: melancholic and pensive, but punctuated by moments of profound joy. The composition will be calming, grounding, exhilarating, and restrained, providing the audience with a deeply immersive and introspective journey.” Hear the world premiere for voice, violin, piano and percussion.
The program also features music by Oswald Huỳnh, Devin Maxwell, and inti figgis-vizueta. Huỳnh’s Glass Shards for violin and harp will be performed. Reception to follow the concert.

Leading with the first of three world premieres by most recently minted Composer-in-Residence Oswald Huỳnh, IPO’s November concert will feature the musical mastery of IPO Concertmaster Azusa Tashiro on Astor Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires. The evening will close with Mozart’s Gran Partita, which offers a glorious explosion of Classical-era Harmoniemusik for small wind ensembles and is justly the most famous piece written for this combination of instruments.
