Program Note:
I have always found the wisteria to be one of the most alluring and elegant flowers; the petals hanging from the vines suspend like purple clouds, interweaving like ocean waves. While writing wisteria waves, I found inspiration in the simplicity and brevity of Japanese poetry and its concise structures. The motifs are built primarily from the intervals of the second, seventh, and ninth, which are developed from subtle rhythmic and textural transformations. To emulate the wisteria, I explored the timbral and coloristic possibilities of the horn. Specifically, the haunting sound of half-valve technique is used to create an airy and delicate atmosphere.
